Computer science professor Max Welling was the recipient of a 2006 MURI Award titled "Learning to Recognize for Visual Surveillance" together with researchers at Caltech (Perona), Berkeley (Malik), MIT (Freeman), UIUC (Forsyth) and UCLA (Soatto). The project is funded for $5M over 5 years and will study visual recognition – the problem of determining the identity of objects and object categories from images.
