Abstract
Artificial intelligence and machine learning models are being increasingly deployed in real-world applications where there is strong motivation to develop hybrid systems in which humans and AI algorithms work together. I will discuss a Bayesian framework for statistically combining predictions from humans and machines while accounting for the unique ways human and algorithmic confidence is expressed, recent work on AI-assisted decision making and estimating individual AI-reliance policies, and the question of machine theory of mind — how humans and machines can efficiently form mental models of each other.
About the speaker
Mark Steyvers is a Professor of Cognitive Science at UC Irvine and Chancellor's Fellow, with a joint appointment in Computer Science and affiliation with the Center for Machine Learning and Intelligent Systems. His work spans cognitive science and machine learning, funded by NSF, NIH, IARPA, NAVY, and AFOSR. He received his PhD from Indiana University and was a Postdoctoral Fellow at Stanford.
